A surefire ways to catch crappie

Friday 30 May 2008 @ 6:26 am

When you go crappie fishing it is not enough to be in the right place at the right time. You need to have your best fishing tips at your disposal. Instead of coming home with a empty stringer , lets take a look at some crappie fishing tips that will fill your cooler on your next fishing trip.

#1 Tip always catch your bait from the same water you are going to fish. Chances are crappie will spit out anything that is not natural to their habitat.

#2 Tip If you fish from a boat and have a fish finder you need to be able to identify large schools of crappie when they show up on your fish finder. When you spot what looks like a upside Christmas tree on the screen this a large school of crappie.

#3 Tip When you locate a large school of crappie never fish in the middle of the school. Work the edges of the school so you do not spook the fish.

#4 Tip When you locate a school of fish, start by line to the bottom. Slowly crank in your reel counting every turn until you get a hit. Now mark your line with a permanent magic marker, preferably a bright color. The reason you mark your line is so you can go right back to the same depth the next time you drop your line. Repeat this step until the crappie school moves.

#5 Tip Crappie rise to the bait their eyes are located on the top of their heads so the do not see anything below them. You must make sure your bait presentation is always above them.

#6 Tip use an ultra-light rig that weighs only a few ounces. Crappie are not heavy hitters. Many time they just suck on the bait and if you do not have light tackle you will never feel the hit.

#7 Tip use 2-4 pound test line, always make sure your is located on a loop, not held tight on the hook ring. The hook needs to move freely to give the bait some play. Remember the more natural the bait looks the more fish you will catch.

Now you are ready for your next crappie fishing trip. If you use all or just a few of the tips above you will improve your crappie catch count. So good luck and good fishing!

How to Catch SHARKS!!

Friday 30 May 2008 @ 6:15 am

Lately a larger part of the population has adopted big-game fishing as a weekend activity. Sharks have become a favorite target, especially in northeastern waters. Their fearsome meat-eating style incites the great North American game fisherman or fisherwoman to prove themselves against this ancient creature of the deep.

A booming shark sport fishing cottage industry has been created featuring many tournaments and contests, and bringing to the dock thousands of blues, makos, tiger sharks and bull sharks ready to be “steak cut” or filleted for a weekend barbeque. Makos & black fin sharks are the best eating.

In this article we are covering the more common and widely available sharks. What applies to these more common sharks also applies to the more regional species such as the great white, hammerhead, bull shark, white tip, and black tip.

Our article covers the blue shark, mako, and tiger sharks. These are the most numerous of popular game shark fishing found in North America, which include, great whites, and hammerheads.

Blue Shark Fishing
The blue shark, preferring cool to temperate waters, is found throughout northeastern waters in summer months. Blue sharks are most prevalent off the coast of Long Island and New England, and they range as far south as Virginia, Maryland, and the Carolinas. Pacific blues are found as far north as Alaska, and have been consistently spotted in Chilean waters.

Blues do not generally hunt for larger mammals and such prey — they can often be found trailing whaling and shrimp boats feeding on waste and bait discards. Yet they are among the most aggressive of all sharks when provoked, and have been known to attack humans when in this state.

Mako Shark Fishing
The Mako shark has an uncharacteristically idiosyncratic-like diet (for a shark) and is extremely tough to land after hooked. They are definitely a game fish for saltwater fishermen who know what they’re doing and have some experience. The penalty for inexperience in this case can be serious injury. The mako is heavily desired among veteran anglers from Montauk to the Sea of Cortez — no other shark possesses or displays the jaw set and teeth of this brute force shark.

Adult mako sharks are world class predators. The mako comes in two versions, the long fin and short fin. Both subspecies range through the tropical and warm-waters of the Atlantic and Pacific. The short fin, however, will often hunt inshore, which makes it the far more common prey of boat captains and charter fishing trips.

This shark is one of the more dangerous sharks to swimmers, surfers and surf fishermen. It also seems, from available evidence, to be the more widely distributed mako, occurring in the Atlantic from Cape Cod to Argentina, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, and in the Pacific from the Columbia River in summer to California coastal waters and as far south as Chile year-round.

Mako have been spotted in the Gulf of California. The long fin mako is a rarer species that favors the open seas of the Caribbean and Pacific. Few long fin mako have ever been caught off the Atlantic coast or Gulf of Mexico. The mako ranks among the most dangerous of sharks. Experienced fishermen everywhere always approach them with the greatest of care. They are furious when hooked, and although their 20′ and 30′ jumps are exciting, makos will often try to ram or leap into the enemy’s boat.

– No shark should be brought boat-side or onto the deck until it is completely exhausted –

– A living shark brought close to overconfident fishermen can cause serious injury.–

– A wounded Mako, like all other large sharks, can bite with strength until drawing its very last breath.

Bait for Sharks
- The shark is widely available to the sport of fishing, because its omnivorous appetite shows little discrimination for artificially rigged bait. They’ll eat anything!!! Use cut bait for sharks, in particular any oily, scented fish e.g. barracuda, mackerel, and oily chum.
Use a slab of kingfish or barracuda under a balloon or bobber & then suspend the slab of bait into the oily chum. Stagger your baits as to shallow level, mid level bait, & deep set bait.

Fishing Tackle
- Heavy conventional, stiff rods. Conventional reels and big hooks. Bring a variety of hooks 5/0 to 10/0 to use depending on the size of the sharks. J hooks or Circle hooks will work just fine.

How to Find Sharks
- Anchor your boat in channels and around rock piles & reef edges. Throw out your chum bag & you shouldn’t have to wait too long for the sharks.

Basic Carp Fishing Pointers

Friday 30 May 2008 @ 6:03 am

Frustrating as it is, carp fishing is awesome. Carp are really good at sucking in and blowing out suspicious baits. It’s such an excitement to see the whole action in a fraction of a second as you hang on for dear life while the reel is trembling with a loud noise.

Carp happily devour on the surface as long as you keep the pellets, biscuits, chic peas, bread, and re-hydrated corn coming in, and these are inexpensive baits as well. Just attach them to the hooks, most preferably the bread. Have the biscuits softened by dipping it in the water for about 2 minutes, then, place them in a sealed sandwich bag for about an hour. Since different brands have different textures, just experiment to know which is firm enough to cast. Another way to hook baits is super gluing the pellet into the shank.

Once they get into feeding, let them feel comfortable around the bait. This gives more opportunity for the fisherman since they begin to not feel picky. This tactic can be useful for zig rigs.

As soon as they’re feeding, cast the bait but make sure not to drop the bait directly onto the feeding carp. Cast away from the feeding area then slowly draw it in position. While the bait is till hanging, keep the food coming in so as to keep the carp from going away.

How to Set-Up?

Use a hair rig to increase your chance of catching. As carp taste food first, if they don’t like the taste, they won’t come near it.
You may also use a Spider Line, 50 lbs test, then use a leader material that fits the situation.
Thread the bait on the baiting needle and hook the hair loop. You may also use foam dipped in a flavor as this enhances the attractiveness of the bait.
Also make a baiting needle by just straightening a long shank hook. Slide the bait on the shank, then slide the bait from the needle onto the hair.
Using a float is also an advantage because it adds weight for further distancing and the location is easily identified.
Don’t forget the controller float rig. A leader can be used which is attached to the swivel to its mainline of at least 3 feet length with a 10lbs Drennan double strength. A low diameter mono will do just as long as it floats well enough for visibility.

As experts say, it is not the bait that catches the carp but the method in which the bait is introduced. Pre-bait everyday, in one spot for a few days. This makes the carp think that there is a regular source of food for them and by word of mouth? there’ll soon be a school of fish around. Just be patient and it will all work.

Ice Fishing anyone?

Friday 30 May 2008 @ 5:50 am

Careful planning and preparation is all it takes to make ice fishing the greatest time of your life or the worst. Easy? Take a look at the following tips and see how prepared you are to catch those fish!

Buy early

Make a list of the supplies you used last season and replenish them early. Make sure you get all those Glo-Buster Bluelights or Lindy Tazers. All you need to remember is four words: wise up, stock up.

Check the hole on the ice floor

Simply put, make sure the hole is clean. Chips or chunks of ice could cause entanglements in one’s fishing line and could make you catch fish or literally break your chances of getting any, as these could sever the line therefore losing your chance of getting that trophy of a lifetime bluegill. Remember to keep the hole clear of any barrier.

Fish more, get the big four

The bait you simply cannot go on without: wax worms, minnows, assorted PowerBait, maggots. It is best to keep these bait separated and as much as possible alive using coolers such as a small Coleman.

Clean em all up

Inspect and clean the rods and fishing reels you are going to use. Q-tips are best for taking out the nicks in every nook and cranny of your ice rod. Non-freezing oil for lubing fishing reels is advisable.

Heat up

Do not forget to bring those heaters and pounds and pounds of propane cylinders. One cannot fish comfortably if he or she is as cold as the fish under the ice. ice fishing should be fun and feel comfy too.

House up

The ice is harsh and cold but it doesn’t mean you have to feel that too. Ice tents should be cleaned out as well by putting over a light coat of lubricant at the joints. If there is any wear or tear, it is best to contact the manufacturer in order for them to send out the appropriate repair kit, as deemed necessary.

Gear Up

Better be safe than sorry, make sure you get a set of lifeguard spikes as well as a safety rope. Also, to feel less of the cold and at the same time be cool, pick up a fishing coat from the Carhartt Extremes Arctic Jacket. Avoid frost bits on your toes and feet, the best shoes are the Irish Setters Versa Trax to keep you warm all over.

Fishing Game: Nature’s Playground

Friday 30 May 2008 @ 5:20 am

If all men measured up to the standards of true sportsmanship, there would be no need for game, fish, and forestry laws. Neither would there be so much need for the laws that regulate human affairs in general.

But, in the fishing game, it is the true sportsman, with a love for the great outdoors, a wholesome respect for the welfare of others, and consideration for living and growing things, who sets the good examples for the youth to follow.

In reality, fishing games differ a lot from the other types of games that man has come to know. A fishing game is not a mere reflection of the activity itself but more of the love for fishing.

In fishing games, the angler does not go hunting or fishing only to gain the privilege of boasting over slaughter or material gain. He loves the lightning-like flash of the trout, the leap of the bass or muskie, the tug on the line, the whir of the reel, the thrill of battle with some “denizens” of the deep, and the companionship of other true sportsmen.

The Concept of Fishing Games

The most common type of fishing game is known as the “offshore game fishing.” In this type of game fishing, the anglers aim for the big lean fishes like the marlins and the tunas and the fishing is done in the sea.

Offshore game fishing is usually conducted as one type of recreational activity. Though, there are instances wherein this type of fishing game is also employed in competitions like the sports fishing.

Because of the energy being utilized in this type of recreational activity, offshore game fishing usually requires the biggest fishing boats. These fishing boats generally range from 30 to 50 feet in length.

The object of the game is to reel the fish in once it is properly hooked on the line. This can be a daunting task since the fish, especially if it is a big one, will have the tendency to pull away from the boat. The challenge is to reel the fish in while keeping the fishing line maintained on its specified tension.

The fishing game is not more of a competition for a true angler. Whenever they are doing this kind of activity as part of the game, what the angler really wants is to get in touch with nature, to breathe the clean, pure air, and muse in solitude in the wilds of nature’s playground.

Hence, in fishing games like offshore game fishing, the anglers like to play the game in strict accordance with the rules of reason and fairness at the same time conserve the value of fishes in the community.

Anger Management Tips to use in Stressful Situations

Monday 26 May 2008 @ 7:36 am

When an individual is dealing with anger issues, usually their emotions evolve when put in stressful situations. If a difficult incident pops up, often their only way to cope with it is to put up their defensive side. Becoming angry is probably easier than dealing with the circumstances. This is unfortunate since anger doesn’t solve anything. Once it subsides, the problem is still there.

There are anger management tips which people can used when found in stressful situations. If there is a friend or family member who is easy to talk to and understanding, it might be good to talk to them. When an individual becomes angry they are incapable of seeing the other side of the problem. Talking to someone may help them by sharing their side of the story. The friend or family member may be able to help them sort through their issues and make them look at the situation from the other side. This anger management tip may work well for some people.

Another great anger management tip is to write down thoughts and feelings during a fit of anger. The angry individual may feel as if nobody understands or cares about their problems. Sharing may only cause extra conflict. Lashing out will get them nowhere. Writing or journaling may help people with anger issues. Without anyone to talk back or object to what they have to say, it may be help to get their feelings off their chest. Using writing as an anger management tip may also help in the future when trying to find the triggers which cause the angry outbursts. Being able to look back over the information written may provide the person with reasons for their anger through reading about similar incidents.

Taking a vacation, spending some alone time is another good anger management tip. Removing oneself from the environment which seems to frustrate and irritate them may be a wise idea. Being able to get away and reflect on their actions may help an individual to look at things differently. Given space and time may be positive for a person with anger issues.

Some people suggest prayer and meditation as anger management tips. Both of these suggestions involve very personal practices for an individual. Given a chance to pray and be alone with one’s thoughts is a good way to release tension and let the pressures of life wash away. Letting go of feelings of anger and negative thoughts would definitely make a positive change in a person’s life. Through prayer and meditation a person is able to dig deep into their minds and souls for answers to their problems and comfort for their broken spirits.

There are lots of anger management tips which people can practice when the going gets tough. Tips such as breathe deeply, exercise, get more rest, get out in nature, find humor in the situation and play or listen to music. These are all recommended as anger management tips for the person who finds themselves in stressful and confrontational situations.

How to rebuild your life, during divorce, become friends

Monday 26 May 2008 @ 7:22 am

Most people will find that it is hard to resolve or let go of their feelings during a divorce. They will become angry and feel like they will lose control at any moment. You should know that there are hundreds of people who feel the same way. You will want to seek therapy to help you control your temper and feelings of rage. When you seek therapy you will also learn how to get along with your mate for the sake of the children. You may also want to stay friends during the divorce so that you don’t end up losing a lot of money during the divorce. You don’t want to spend hours of your time in mediation or court. You want to be able to put this as much in the past as possible. You don’t want to waste any more money and time than necessary so you should become friends with your mate for the sake of that.

To be friends you should still care about what the other feels. You should talk to them privately and civilized. If you want out of a marriage and remain friends, you should try to keep affairs and such out of the air. If they don’t know that you have been seeing someone else, don’t tell them. Just tell them that you aren’t feeling good about the marriage and want to try it apart. You will also want to keep the affair to a minimum during the divorce. As soon as you place another person in the mixing you will have someone feeling defensive, and that’s not your goal of this.

You should also participate in family therapy so that the kids don’t feel that it’s their fault. You can find security in therapy and you will notice that most people will be able to feel better because they have resolved some of the issues. They have gotten answers for some of their issues. When it comes to being friends, it’s hard to divide everything up and still claim friendship.

Divorce is territorial and the worst of everyone will become evident. This is when you will want to set a day or two aside to talk to your spouse calmly about what goes and what stays. If you talk without the attorneys then you can keep things off the defensively and be more productive. You can go through out the house and talk about all the things that you are going to miss and how you feel. This way they know that this isn’t so easy for you either. Most of the time, you can resolve all the issues of a divorce by just talking off the record. You can save money on the lawyers as well as the hurt that is involved. You may end up having to give up some control over certain matters so that the compromise will allow the divorce to stay civilized. When you talk, you should never raise your voice. Your tone should be low and you should try to understand their side so that you are able to have a clean sweep.

You should explain to your mate that this is not an act or plea to come back. You have cared about them for a long time and still do and that is why you would like to spare any of the hardships. Some people will try to be nice to come back, but if you are nice to your spouse in general, things will be more pleasant for everyone and the divorce will go quickly. You should compromise, but you shouldn’t give more than you are willing.

You also need to be flexible which means that you should be able to handle different types of dogs without a high degree of difficulty.
You should also be clear in giving instructions especially during training sessions.
You also need to be physically fit in order to conduct proper training.
It would also help to be organized so you will not miss out any training exercise.
Find pleasure in what you do because work will not be so tiring if you enjoy doing what you do.

Lastly a dog training career is still very promising especially since there are still very few people that venture in this type of profession. This means that you will have very little competition.

A Travel to Jamaica First Aid Kit

Sunday 25 May 2008 @ 10:01 pm

When traveling abroad it’s usually wise to take with you a basic first aid kit ?nothing fancy, just a tin with a few bits and pieces that can help you out if you have an accident and need a temporary bandage or pain killer until you can locate where the nearest source of medical attention is. If you are traveling to Jamaica, or anywhere else in the Caribbean there are some other things that it might be useful to carry with you.

Some form of aspirin/Tylenol to help reduce fever or relieve headaches ?or muscle strains from sports your body is unaccustomed to. If you know that you intend to take part in water sports or new activities you may want to consider a pain relieving cream (or spray if you can find one that isn’s aerosol based ?airline regulations apply here!).

An anti-bacterial cream to deal with any grazes or cuts that you may get taking part in activities, or even just walking on the beach if you stand on a sharp shell.

Hay fever medication ?even if you aren’t known to suffer from hay fever, putting a packet of anti-histamines in your first aid box is just insurance against you finding out that you are allergic to a certain type of pollen ?and it’s found in Jamaica!

Insect repellent! Anything that contains DEET should work fine. Pack this close to the top of the first aid kit ?and also carry one in your on-flight luggage in case it’s a while before you get your bags once you arrive in Jamaica!

Sun block ?again this should be a spare for the one you have in your on-fight luggage.

Anti-diarrhea medication. As with the hay fever medication, you probably won’t need it but it’s better to take it and not use it, than not to take it and need it!

Bandage, and plasters for cuts and sprains. Take the one size fits all?variety so that it doesn’t matter where you hurt, your bandage or plaster will fit!

Thermometer ?even one of those little forehead strips that you can get for kids to check for fevers will be good enough to tell you if you’re got a temperature or you’re just a little unaccustomed to the tropical heat!

You should also pack any prescription medication you take, along with any syringes you need for taking it. Mark the prescription medication carefully, and include the prescribing doctor’s name in case you are questioned over it at customs and immigration. Always carry two sets of prescribed medication, one in your carry-on luggage and one in the checked luggage so that you are sure that even if one set goes missing, you have a back-up.

Taking a first aid box on your Jamaica vacation isn’t planning for the worst, it’s providing insurance. You pay for it and you don’t intend to have to use it ?but it’s just good to know that it’s there just in case!

Bahamas Football

Sunday 25 May 2008 @ 9:44 pm

Over the last few centuries the sport of football has greatly become popular. Groups like the Federation Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, have helped to spread the popularity of the sport to many different countries. The Bahamas are among the places that have been influenced by the sport. However, Bahamas football is just something that has become popular in recent times.

Sports in the Bahamas as a whole was not that big until the early part of the twentieth century. During the 1920s and 1930s there were football clubs that began playing the game on the island of New Providence. There were all sorts of clubs, most notably Scouts, St. George and St. Michael, that began playing here. These clubs would also play games with groups from naval ships from other countries and other recreation ships that docked at Nassau. Most of the games here were played during the Eastern Parade.

In the 1940s football truly began to be popular. The Boxing Day Soccer Classic was formed for competition for all of the football clubs in the country. The Vikings and St. Georges were the most popular teams in the game at this time.

In 1954 sports in the Bahamas took a turn into more popularity as a league for football teams was formed. The Bahamas Football Amateur Association, which was formed by English businessman Brian Andrews, had several ten man teams that played matches on Sundays at the Park Clifford. The league would have some additional team as time went on.

The first major match that took place involves a team from the Bahamas came in 1957. A team of all-star players from the country played in a major trophy match against the Coral Gables Soccer Club.

With more international games involved the Bahamas Football Association was formed. This was for the intention of representing the country in international matches. The group would get its full affiliation with FIFA not long after that.

The BFA also joined the Confederation of North, Caribbean and Central America Association of Football. The group joined this league in 1981. This was used especially for representation in local matches.

Bahamas Football is another of the notable groups for the sport in the country. It works in the creation of leagues in numerous islands around the area. It also helps to educate people about the game, including information for not only players but also for coaches and officials.

Sports in the Bahamas have grown in popularity over the years, and Bahamas football is just one of the best examples. With all of the groups involved in the sport around the country it can be seen here that the sport is indeed popular and is continuing to grow in not only the Bahamas but also in other countries in the area.

Tips for Saving Money on Energy ?Especially for Your Heater

Saturday 24 May 2008 @ 11:10 pm

Your energy bills can be expensive over time, and this is especially going to be the case in warm or cold times of the year. Commodity prices and energy consumption is only going to increase over time, so saving money on energy is important. This is especially going to be important if you are going to be in an area where your heating system will need to be used more often.

Using solar energy is a great thing to use for saving money on energy. This works in that natural heat from the sun is captured by solar panels. The means that less energy will be consumed in the home and your home energy costs will be significantly reduced.

A home inspection can be useful for checking to see if your energy is useful or not. If there is any leakage in your home you should seal them up so that any heat energy is not lost and more has to be spent on energy. Windows and doors are the most common places where leakage can occur, but fireplaces can also have leakage areas.

Use heaters on rooms in your home that you use more often. If there are any rooms in your home that are not used as often you should close them off from your heating and turn off the thermostat in those areas. Closing windows to trap in natural heat is also important. This can help you to reduce your costs significantly.

Insulation is important for your home energy costs. When your home is well insulated you will be able to save on your energy costs. That’s because insulation will keep the heat in the home without having to lose anything in terms of energy. One of the most common concerns about energy is that it can be lost by having it escape from the home, and having a well insulated home can be used to keep this from happening.

The last of the tips for saving on home energy costs is to have a useful heating system. When your home heating system is not working properly it can get you to lose money on heat by spending more of an effort to try and get heat out. Also, if the product is defective it will only force you to waste more money on repairs and replacements.

Your home energy costs will be an especially important expense for you to consider. Therefore, you should look into saving money on energy with your heater. Having a solar energy source is useful. Inspecting your home for leakages and insulation is important. Adjusting your heaters in rooms you do not use is also important. They’re all essential things to use for your home and your budget.

Ways To Make Your Kitchen More Energy Efficient And Save Money

Saturday 24 May 2008 @ 10:59 pm

a) Kitchen Appliances

Install energy efficient labelled kitchen appliances (refrigerators, dishwashers, and clothes washers). Every kitchen appliance has two price tags ?a purchase price and the operating cost. Energy efficient models will save you money and use less energy.

b) Lighting

- Install energy efficient labelled lighting (e.g., light fixtures: suspended lights, ceiling-mounted lights, cabinet lights, recessed lights, and compact fluorescent bulbs).

c) Refrigerator

- In most households, the refrigerator is the single biggest energy consuming kitchen appliance. Energy efficient refrigerator models use high efficiency compressors, improved insulation, and more precise temperature and defrost mechanisms to improve energy efficiency. Energy efficient refrigerators provide energy savings without sacrificing the features you want.

- Keep your refrigerator and freezer filled for most economical operation. Less cold air is lost when the door is opened in a filled refrigerator because the food helps retain the cold.

- Allow foods to partially cool before placing them in the refrigerator. It takes more energy to cool hot food. For added savings, cover foods and liquids. The moisture that is released by uncovered containers increases energy use during the refrigerator’s defrost cycle.

- Select a refrigerator with a freezer on top. A side-by side unit uses up to 20 percent more energy. The Energy Guide label will help you choose the most efficient model.

d) Oven

- Don’t open the oven door to take a peek at what’s cooking inside. Instead, turn on the oven light and check the cooking status through the oven window. Opening the oven door lowers the temperature inside - by as much as 25 degrees - which increases cooking time and wastes energy.

-As long as your oven is on, cook several items at the same time. Just make sure you leave enough room for the heat to circulate around each item.

- In an electric oven, you can turn the heat off several minutes before your food is fully cooked. As long as the oven door remains closed, enough heat will be stored inside to finish cooking your meal.

e) Dishwasher

- Let your dishes air dry. A dishwasher uses more energy to dry dishes than to wash them. If your dishwasher doesn’t have an automatic air-dry switch, turn off the control knob after the final rinse and prop the door open to let moisture escape.

- When purchasing a dishwasher, look for energy saving features such as a short wash cycle. Shorter washing cycles, with fewer rinses, save water and water-heating energy.

- Use your dishwasher only for full loads. Be sure your dishwasher is full, but not overloaded when you turn it on. Improper loading can result in poorly cleaned dishes that need to be rewashed.

- Install your dishwasher away from your refrigerator. The dishwasher’s heat and moisture make the refrigerator work harder. Keep your refrigerator away from other heat sources such as direct sunlight.

f) Kitchen Walls, Windows and Doors

- If your remodelling plans include opening walls you could improve your comfort and the energy efficiency of your home by adding insulation and air sealing. If you are replacing the windows, doors, and skylights, install those with the energy efficient label to make your kitchen the most energy efficient on the block.

Bonsai Tree Care

Saturday 24 May 2008 @ 10:39 pm

If you are considering a Bonsai tree for that special person, there are a few things you should know to ensure that you end up with a nice healthy tree. First and foremost think about the conditions the tree will be in. Indoor Bonsai will generally need to be close to a window or be supplemented with artificial light. A small tray with gravel and a little bit of water under the tree will add humidity around the tree. It may not need to be watered every day but it should be checked daily as the small pots can dry out rather quickly.

Steps in bonsai care:

Watering

Watering is the most important part in bonsai care. This is the crux of the art of bonsai. Most Bonsai tree that die are lost due to dehydration, either from lack of watering or from being kept in a low humidity environment (indoors) for too long. How often you should water is a common question people ask about bonsai trees. There is no hard and fast rule prescribed for the same. When the soil begins to dry out water your plant thoroughly until the excess water runs out of the bottom of the pot, signifying you’re done. Remember, over-watering is as bad as under-watering, thus all the fuss about getting it just right.

Pots and soil

The soil you use affects rooting, feeding, watering and transpiration, it is where half your tree lives so this is the second biggest consideration in maintaining your bonsai. While the needs of individual species vary greatly a good rule of thumb is 30% grit, 70% humus for deciduous trees, and 70% grit with 30% humus for evergreen-needled plants. Bonsai trees should be fertilized with a water-soluble fertilizer once or twice per month during the growing season. However the choice of fertilizer may vary depending on the species you’ve chosen to miniaturize. Always apply fertilizer when the soil is wet. Bonsai trees are intentionally allowed to become root-bound in their containers, and the roots too, are pruned.

Pruning

A bonsai plant is pruned in two ways viz. branch pruning and root pruning. Pruning of branches is performed in spring. Much, but not all of the new growth is removed. Branches are selected early on as the only branches to be allowed to prosper, while the excess branches are mercilessly pruned off. The main factor in maintaining bonsai is the removal of all but the most important parts of the plant. Bonsai is all about the reduction of everything just to the essential elements. Also Bonsai trees are intentionally allowed to become root-bound in their containers, and the roots too, are pruned. But root-bound plants won’t thrive forever in that condition and, indeed, bonsai trees must be re-potted every two or three years to furnish the roots with fresh soil.

Changing the shape of the tree

Bonsai tree wiring is an advanced skill to grow the bonsai into an art form. Desirable branches are wired to control the direction in which they grow. Wiring can do a great deal to change the shape of the plant, but it can also do a great deal of damage to the plant if done incorrectly.

To sum up

This may seem like a lot to do to just to buy a little tree, but it’s no different than any other informed purchase, just as you wouldn’t buy a fish without having a special home for it you should have a special home for your Bonsai tree.

Motivation in Sports Through Goal Setting

Saturday 24 May 2008 @ 10:22 pm

In sports, coaches and mentors have been providing effective and sound motivation to athletes through goal setting. The practice is being recognized as effective and potent in the sports training scne for the past three decades already.

Because sports training is taken more seriously now by handlers and athletes alike, it is imperative that the athletes be conditioned mentally, emotionally and physically during trainings and practices.

To be able to achieve such targets, there are various techniques and measures that are used to provide motivational devices and tactics to the athletes.

In general, nothing else will come close to the motivation being provided to the athletes by effective and practical goal setting activities.

Motivation and goal setting

Thus, in the contemporary sports arena, motivation and goal settings are two different concepts that are now inter-twined and inter-connected.

That is because goal setting provides motivation to athletes, and in turn, motivation provides goals. The two concepts are really working hand in hand in making the best come out from every successful sportsman or athlete.

Goals that are set by athletes provide them direction, and motivation fills it up with fuel to keep everything—the mind, the body, the determination—going on and on.

Motivation is what keeps athletes going and keep on striving, while goals, set through goal setting activities, put up targets and direction to help monitor and gauge the efforts and initiatives.

Characteristics of good goals

Goal setting, thus, has to be effective and well-planned. There are several attributes of good and effective goals, which should be paid particular and utmost attention to during the tedious and ardent goal setting tasks. Here are some of them.

Goals must be specific and measurable. They are to be made specific in a sense that particular targets and aims are set. Measurable, when they can recorded and compared to previous performance and records. By that, goals are becoming more effective when looking out at progress and developments in sports trainings and practices.

Goals must be realistic, but at the same time difficult. Challenging goals provide more motivation and force athletes to strive better and release more effort, making them stronger and more determined, traits that would really be advantageous in the long run.

Goals must be achievable in the long term or in the short term. There is no sense setting out goals that are practically and logically unachievable. Even if the effort is raised 100 times, 1,000 times or 1 million times, if the they are really unachievable, nothing will do to make the athletes realize them. Short term goals are far better motivation tools than long term, but they can be used to eventually lead to longer-term goals and targets.

Goals should reflect priorities. Make sure goals are in line and not conflicting with priorities. Otherwise, the efforts to achieve the set of goals would be futile and inutile despite a good and strong set of motivation and determination.

Overall, motivation should, at the same time with goals, get athletes going with greater and more significant focus. Otherwise, measures and actions should be done, or goals reset, to help the athlete attain the much needed concentration.

Motivation fuels goal setting and strategies. Focus make up the steering wheel in the long and winding drive to the attainment of the ambitious and noble goal.

Buying A Golden Puppy

Saturday 24 May 2008 @ 10:06 pm

We all know that Golden Retrievers are beautiful, obedient, and make great family pets and hunting dogs. Golden’s also make

great guide dogs for the blind, narcotic detection dogs, and even tracking dogs for finding missing people. Although there are many other dog breeds out there, Golden Retrievers

remain one of the most versatile and most astonishing breeds that you can get.

Before you rush out and buy a Golden Retriever puppy, you should first take the time to learn a bit more about the breed. You

can attend dog shows, meet with various owners of Golden Retrievers, and even go to your local kennel club. Most people who own Golden Retrievers are extremely proud of them and

will be more than happy to share their enthusiasm with you.

When you buy you’re Golden Retriever puppy, it’s always a great idea to buy from a backyard breeder or local puppy mill. Backyard breeders are normally the best way to get a

Golden puppy, as they know and care a lot about the breed in general. Although you can always go to a reputable breeder, backyard breeders aren’t just in it for the money -

they actually care about their dogs and want you to get the best Golden possible.

You can also visit the Golden Retriever Club of America and their local member clubs, as they can supply you with a list of

breeders in your area. If these breeders don’t have any Golden’s for sale themselves, they will be more than willing to help you find what you’re looking for. This way, you

can get a Golden from a very reliable source.

Whatever you do, you should never rush into buying a Golden Retriever. You should always take your time, and have a little bit

of patience. When you buy your puppy, you want a healthy puppy who will grow up to be a fine testament of the breed. By taking your time and making a careful decision, you can

save yourself a lot of time and money later on down the road.

Golden puppies that are poor quality, are normally produced by breeders who just want to have a litter or breeders who are just looking for the profits and care very little

about giving thoughts to looks, quality, or temperament. If you buy a puppy from either of these breeders, you’ll more than likely end up with a puppy who has poor health, poor

temperaments, and even disqualifications in breed.

When you get your puppy, you should always think long term. Only buy from a quality breeder, and you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. Always remember that you aren’t just

buying a Golden Retriever puppy - you are buying a companion and a friend for life.
